The subject is Sam Browne, a renowned soldier of the Victorian Era.

Inventor of the Sam Browne belt.

He served with the 2nd Punjab Irregular Cavalry and inventd the belt after being wounded at Seerporah and subsequently being unable to control his sword.

The artist signed APE was Carlo Pellegrini
